A Mariner's Compass quilt in The Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation archives inspired most of the fabrics in this
collection. Made in the mid-1800s by Clarissa Dodge
Marschalk, probably in New York, the exquisite original
was created with 16 blocks, each containing a 32-point
compass within a quilted circle. The blocks are
separated by bands of glazed chintz and the outer border
is a wide glazed floral chintz. Clarissa's work is
exceptionally fine and her color choices of blues,
yellow, browns, and pinks provide a beautiful aesthetic.
Two additional fabrics are also included in this
collection. A scenic toile dated 1810, and a small
floral sprig used as a backing to a chintz panel-both
from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's collections.
With beautiful designs, enticing colors, and timeless
appeal, these fabrics will help quilters create their
own piece of history. |
