Inspired
by the collections of Colonial Williamsburg Exclusively by Windham Fabrics
In colonial times, the
well-furnished home almost always included bed hangings
that were often the most valuable item in the house.
Functional as well as aesthetically appealing, they
provided an intimate refuge and a public announcement of
wealth and taste. Curtains were drawn around the bed
during the night to provide privacy and retain warmth.
During the day, curtains were drawn open or pulled up to
make the bed an elegant showpiece. The textile that
inspired this fabric collection was made in England
about 1790. It was imported to America and made into bed
hangings with a matching counterpane (quilt), and held
pride of place in a New England bed chamber.
The Providence Collection is inspired by a single
block-printed, glazed chintz textile in Colonial
Williamsburg's collection. Individual elements were
extracted from the overall pattern to create a rich
assortment of complementary fabric designs.
